Hydrosol and Essential Oil Distillers: 6 rules to buy or to construct a steam distiller by yourself
- The Hydrosol and Essential Oil distiller must have a steamer basket, otherwise the still wouldn’t be appropriate for the water steam distillation of essential oils and hydrolates. The herbs and blossoms may only be extracted by the waterSTEAM, they must not be cooked in the water.
- The opening of the kettle should be very wide so that you can fill in the herbs and plants easily. Pay attention to an adequate size of the kettle, because otherwise the yield of the essential oils would be to low.
- The steam pipe’s diameter of the still shouldn’t be too small in relation to the volume of the still. The thinner and longer the pipe, the higher the pressure in the kettle while distilling. Even a small interior excess pressure results in a considerable change of the steam temperature. Furthermore, an interior excess pressure results in losses of flavor.
- All materials of the still should not interact with the vapor or distillate. For example, don’t use rubber seals or a rubber hose, because rubber is not resistant against essential oils. The oils and hydrolates would strongly smell like rubber. Heat resistant glass, stainless steel or copper are optimal materials, all three materials don’t influence the result of the distillation.
- The essential oil distiller must have an effective burner or has to have a flat kettle appropriate for a cooker, otherwise the heating process would last too long and this would destroy a part of the flavour.
- The following applies especially for beginners: Ensure you get professional advise, because at the beginning of your artisan distilling hobby a lot of questions will arise: How to build an essential oil still? How to distill herbs, roses, lavender, rosemary and so on at home? What equipment is necessary for a homedistiller? etc.
